SHERRIN RACING SECURES 4TH APC OUTRIGHT TITLE

Iain Sherrin has claimed Sherrin Racing’s fourth Mobil 1 Australian Production Cars outright title, clinching the outright championship honours as well as the X Class title trophy with an impressive effort at the Bathurst International this weekend which included three APC outright race wins in the #72 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4. He also won the Enduro Cup for X Class.

Grant Sherrin meanwhile brought home the APC Sprint Cup both outright and in Class X and claimed third for the outright title and second in the Class X championship.

After Iain had led the title until the penultimate round, Iain and Grant Sherrin headed into the final event of the 2023 season trailing leaders Coleby Cowham and Lindsay Kearns in the outright standings by 33 points and 68 points respectively. At the same time, Iain led the X class title over Grant, and Grant led the Sprint Cup for both outright and in class.

In qualifying on Friday, Grant secured the first points of the weekend with pole position outright and in class, giving him two points for his tally.

Come the racing, a strong and consistent effort by Iain to win both of Saturday’s outings saw him close the gap to Cowham/Kearns to just three points ahead of the final two outings.

Second outright for APC and in class in race three, the penultimate race of the weekend, then saw Iain launch himself into the title lead with a seven-point margin with just one race to go, while also securing the X class championship.

Grant meanwhile had crossed the line 2nd in class and outright for race one, before bringing home a pair of 3rd places both outright and in class across races two and three – at which point Grant had the outright Sprint Cup won and 3rd place in the title locked down.

Come the final race of the weekend, Iain got both hands on the big trophy by securing the outright championship thanks to another APC outright and Class X race win. He also won the round outright and for class.

Grant meanwhile crossed the line in in 3rd outright and in class, which saw him add to his tally by officially winning the Sprint Cup in class X and come home 3rd for the round outright and in class.

Having claimed the team’s fourth outright championship and the latest in a lengthy list of class titles, Iain Sherrin struggled to find the words to describe the achievement after the final race.

“I mean, where do you start?” Iain grinned widely.

“The cars were just fantastic this weekend which is a credit to Stuart our Head Mechanic/Engineer and also to Klae and Jimmy back in the workshop – the work they put into these cars is amazing and when they rolled out this weekend, they were just bulletproof.

“Also, Nathan who was on my head set all year did an amazing job – having split into the two cars for this year it had been Dad (Michael Sherrin) on the head set previously and Nathan took over that for me this year and did fantastically well. Really to each and every member of our team, this is credit to them.

“It was great teamwork, and I really cannot thank Mike (Michael Sherrin) and Grant enough. It may be an individual title, but it was a full team effort, and I am just ecstatic for the team to get our fourth outright championship, it is just amazing.

“It was a hard-fought battle this year, we had a lot of ups and downs and I think the cars were quicker this year than they have ever been, which brings its own issues sometimes as we had to get our heads around how the cars were treating the tyres at that level.

“Full credit must go to Coleby and Lindsay in the Mustang and their team – they had an amazing season and they pushed us all year, right to the end. They were so consistent, and it reminded me a lot of when we won outright in our B class BMW 135i. Congratulations to them on a great year.

“Thank you to all of our sponsors for their support, we couldn’t do this without them: Wirtgen Group, Sherrin Rentals, Hi-Tec Oils, Industrial Protective Coatings Qld, Custom Plastic Fabrication, Action Mechanical Specialists, Symmetry Engineering, Hydraulink Brisbane North, Welding Solutions, Great Whites Lighting, Sherrin Equipment, Construction Equipment Australia and Brisbane Isuzu.”

Grant was also quick to single out the team and supporting partners in light of the impressive results for Sherrin Racing in this year’s Australian Production Cars championship.

“I had a great weekend, the car performed really well, and I had good battles with Iain and also the Simon Hodges/Iain Salteri car throughout all of the races. Overall, it was a really good weekend,” Grant said.

“The main thing I want to say is to send a big shout out to all of our team, they put in a great effort throughout the year, and they put in a lot between each of the events. They do not always all come with us depending on the timing and locations, but they are all involved every step of the way.

“Dad (Michael Sherrin) as team manager has done an exceptional job, and each and every member of our team played a critical role. Thank you to Klae, Nathan, Stuart, Jimmy, Dave and Paul, without them we wouldn’t be getting to the track and their efforts in the pit stops and throughout the races has been great – I think we are one of the best in pit lane and it is a credit to them for all they put in, so I really appreciate al of their efforts.

“Iain has done an exceptional job this year with great driving, and this is a very well-deserved championship win, so well done to him too.

“I am pretty happy with that,” Grant added regarding being 3rd outright, 2nd in class, and the Sprint Cup winner outright and in class.

“We debuted a new car this year and we made a lot of changes to it, and in the back end of the year it had been quite strong, and I have been quite strong in it.

“We had a few teething problems at the start of the year, but it is going to be a great year next year. Iain and I will be fighting it out again and I am looking forward to seeing who else joins us in the battle.

“Finally, thank you to all of our sponsors for their support – we appreciate them being on board with us and being along for the journey as part of our team. Thank you to each and every one of them.”
