Sherrin Racing has stood on the podium for round five of the Mobil 1 Australia Production Cars at The Bend, with Grant Sherrin claiming an outright second place and class X first-place finish in the #27 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4.
Iain Sherrin joined Grant on the podium, claiming second for Class X in the #72 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4.
The Sherrin’s podium getting performance came despite both Sherrin Racing cars struggling with tyre issues across the weekend’s four races. The team put the problem down to faulty pressure sensor valves, causing damage to the rims.
In a valiant effort, Grant Sherrin secured three APC outright podium finishes from the four races, as well as three Class X victories, with Iain Sherrin taking the remaining win.
“The car had some good speed for the whole weekend. We were still getting a little bit of the setup right in practice, but we got it right. We went out and qualified well,” Grant said.
“I had dramas all weekend with tyres, but we found the issue with that. We’re putting it down to tyre pressure sensors that go into the rims, causing damage to the rims.
“When we didn’t have a tyre problem, the cars were on song. It was really good. I got second outright in the first race but didn’t go too well in the third race because of the tyre issues. I ended up winning the last race, which helped make up for coming in 9th outright in the previous race.
“The pitstops were fantastic; they were really, really quick, which helped us stay in touch, or in front of the A1 and A2 cars where they only have to do one tyre change, and we have to do two. Our crew were incredibly fast and on point this weekend and our results are a testament to their hard work.“
Races one and two saw Iain Sherrin claim second in Class X and seventh outright while battling tyre issues. Come Sunday’s race three, Iain broke through to Class X victory and outright second. In race four, the #27 was on track for an outright podium when he suffered damage from tapping the wall in the last stint, persevering to bring the M4 home second in class and 10th outright.
“It was a challenging weekend overall with the tyre issues we had to deal with for sure. But, the team really banded together and I’m proud of what we were able to achieve,” Iain said.
“I was able to take out a Class X race win and three runner-up positions to claim second alongside Grant, who was on the top step of the Class X podium and second outright, which is a great result for the team.
“Tapping the wall late in race four wasn’t ideal, but I’m glad I could nurse the car home to gain valuable championship points ahead of the final round of the season.
“Once again, the Sherrin Racing crew put in a fantastic effort and we can’t wait to round out the season next month.”
Sherrin Racing will next be on track for the final round of the Mobil 1 Australian
Production Cars at Mount Panorama at The Bathurst International across 10-12 November for four 30-minute sprint races to decide the championship.
