Sherrin Racing continues to dominate the Mobil 1 Australian Production Cars championship, taking out 1st and 2nd outright and in Class X during round four of the 2023 season held at Sandown International Raceway at the weekend.

Both Sherrin Racing cars featured on the podium across all but one of the weekend’s four 30-minute races. Sunday’s races three and four proved to be the highlight of the weekend, with 1-2 outright and Class X finishes from Grant and Iain across both races, respectively.

Grant Sherrin claimed first for APC and in Class X in the #27 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4 across all four races during the weekend.

“It has been a really great weekend,” Grant Sherrin said.

“I finally had some luck go my way after a tricky season so far. It’s been a very important weekend for our championship aspirations. And it was a good weekend to be able to claw some points back on that.

“And Iain (driver of the #72 Sherrin Rentals BMW, 2nd for APC outright and Class X) had a good weekend too, so it is great to have a Sherrin Racing 1-2 outright and in class.

“I am not sure where I will be exactly now in the championship chase, but this weekend should help close that position up to possibly second in the title chase.

“It has been a fantastic result for the team with 1-2 for the weekend.

“Not only did we win in APC, we were also mixing it up with the GT4 Australia cars as well which was cool (Sherrin was third on the overall combined grid in three races). I had some great battles with Mark Griffith and Steve Jukes. Racing with them made me really push a little bit harder and I got some really good times out of my car.

“The car was just hooked up as well and having the straight line speed that we normally have. So we were able to get off the corners really well, which helped us stay up there with them. They still had it over us in the corners, but not as much as normal. And having two long straights helped us too. It was kind of a like a real big seesaw. We would get a run in the straight and then they would close it up, and sometimes traffic would close it right up and ignite the battle again – it was really good fun with a lot of good battles.

“To have the car right up there not only in APC but overall is a credit to the team – they have done a really great job setting it up and everything just fell into place with us. I am really happy with the way this weekend went.”

Iain Sherrin took out two 2nd, one 3rd, and one 5th outright finishes, alongside four 2nd place Class X finishes in the #72 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4.

“It was a bit of a tough day on Saturday as we had a couple of engine issues that were restricting the horsepower, so I didn’t have the full legs that I needed to do what I needed to do, but we found the issue and fixed that overnight to have full power back on Sunday, which allowed me to push back up to the front for APC and play with the GT4 Australia boys as well, which was a lot of fun,” Iain Sherrin said.

“The car had great pace in it, and it was really knocking out the times and pushing up the field on Sunday, and it was good that we were able to learn what the problem was on Saturday, so if it happens again, we know what it is.

“Congratulations too to Grant on his first clean-sweep – this is the second clean-sweep for the team now, as I got our first in Sydney earlier in the year. He had an awesome weekend and drove really well.

“The team were fantastic as always all weekend. Thank you to all of them and to Nathan on my headset, he called a really good weekend.

“In the final race, Jacob Lawrence (GT4) didn’t realise we were under yellows and thought I was leaving a gap, and in trying to make the move did spin me. He came up afterwards and apologised, and I was able to resume and keep going and pass some cars before the end of the race to still finish 2nd for class and APC outright, so that was good, at least.

“Overall, it was a lot of fun dicing with the guys up the front, and second outright for APC and in Class is very good for my championship campaign. It probably extends our points buffer a bit, and with the 1-2 for the team, it will bring Grant closer too, especially as Coleby Cowham and Lindsay Kearns were unable to finish race four – you never want to see that happen, but it certainly does jump us ahead a bit in the championship.”

Coming into the final two rounds of the season, the clean sweep of points for Grant and multiple podiums for Iain sets Sherrin Racing up for a strong championship finish with Iain continuing to lead, and Grant closing the gap to second outright.

Mobil 1 Australian Production Cars are running a combined grid alongside Monochrome GT4 Australia this year.
