Earlier this week, Sherrin Rentals – sponsor of Sherrin Racing – announced its sponsorship of an extended three-hour Fight in the Night.
The popular race will be held at Queensland Raceway on the evening of Saturday July 13, as part of a two day event featuring the Meguiar’s Australian Production Cars, Hyundai Excels, Monochrome GT exotic cars and more at Queensland Raceway, filling the gap left in the venue’s calendar by Motorsport Australia’s cancellation of the planned SpeedSeries event for that weekend.
As the reigning Fight in the Night winners Sherrin Racing is excited about the recent developments, explains driver and current Meguiar’s APC outright and class X Champion, Iain Sherrin.
“The Sherrin family and Sherrin racing has always been supportive of production car racing, and directly involved for almost two decades, including multiple outright and class championships, and also administrative involvement in the past,” Sherrin said.
“Like all of our fellow production car racers, we were very disappointed about not only the cancellation of the scheduled SpeedSeries event for July, but also the way in which that cancellation was communicated, with no advance notice to key stakeholders including category management, and no alternate options for many of the affected categories offered.
“We certainly feel like production cars and its competitors haven’t been treated appropriately in this process, and as a former category manager, it certainly feels to me like part of a pattern of how production cars are viewed and treated by some members of motorsport administration.
“Just five weeks out from an event, considerable funds have been spent by competitors between accommodation and travel bookings and event preparations, and there is also the fact that people plan their lives – including booking time away from work – around the scheduled dates.
“With the last minute cancellation and no information provided, as a competitor group we all feared we would be left out of pocket while also seeing this traditional race on our calendar fall by the wayside.
“So, it is safe to say when Queensland Raceway and Meguiar’s Australian Production Cars were able to put together this independent event to ensure this traditional cornerstone of our championship would proceed, and on the same weekend as originally scheduled so those investments made by competitors would be protected, we were very pleased indeed.
“It made sense for us to get on board and support it however we could, and everyone at Sherrin Racing is very excited to not only be competing in this three hour Fight in the Night, but that the race will carry the Sherrin Rentals name.
“To be able to play a part in protecting this important race on our calendar this year and ensuring its continuation not only in 2024 but also hopefully into the future, is something the entire Sherrin family is very proud of.”
As part of the July 12-13 event, Meguiar’s APC will contest two practice sessions on the Friday, followed by qualifying on the Saturday ahead of the three-hour Fight in the Night that evening. Further information about the event will be released in due course by Queensland Raceway.
