It was a strong start to the 2024 Meguiar’s Australian Production Car season and title defence for Sherrin Racing at the weekend, with both Sherrin Rentals BMW M4s claiming multiple Outright and Class X podium finishes across the season opener at Sandown International Raceway (February 9-11).
Grant Sherrin claimed one second place outright and in class X race finish and two third place outright and in class results across Saturday’s three races, plus a further third place outright and in class for Sunday’s race four in the #27 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4. These race results saw Grant claim third outright and in class for the weekend overall.
“Overall the handling of the car across the weekend was good and we feel that we are some of the strongest in the field in that regard, it is just straight-line speed where we need to find some improvement. We’ll go away and do some fine-tuning so we can get back in front for the next round,” Grant said.
“We had a pretty good race on Sunday. We made some changes to the car that weren’t quite right up there, but we ended up finishing third in the race. Iain’s car got the benefit from a couple of the things we tried in both cars on Sunday to help us chase the two guys in front.
“They (the #118 of Dean Campbell and Cameron Crick and #21 of Simon Hodges and Jayden Ojeda) have got a bit of straight-line speed on us so we had to go back and do some homework after Saturday’s races, and we were able to close that gap a bit on Sunday. We’ll continue to work on that for the next round.
“With a short offseason, the team has done a great job getting the cars looking as good as they do and running as well as they are.
“Thank you to Stuart, Jimmy and Paul for not only doing a fantastic job in the heat over the weekend and with the short turnarounds between races, but also getting the cars to the track on-time, and to Michael on getting the new tyres sorted and nailing the tyre pressure set-up.”
On Sunday, Iain Sherrin raced to second place outright and in class in the #72 Sherrin Rentals BMW M4 for the final race of the weekend, adding to his tally of three fourth places outright and in class on Saturday. The points from these results saw him claim fourth outright and in class for the round.
“It was a good weekend, we were just lacking a little bit of straight-line speed which we worked on overnight and gained back for Sunday,” Iain said.
“We gained a lot of points and there were no other dramas. The cars are handling very well; we are very happy with the weekend, and it was a good start to the season. We just need to climb a few more positions.
“So far, we are feeling pretty confident about the championship and once we get to a few other tracks that suit us a bit more it will be a tight run this year with the other Class X cars. We’re really looking forward to it.”
Sherrin Racing will be next on-track for the Bathurst 6 Hour across March 29-31, before continuing their APC exploits with round two at The Bend Motorsport Park across May 31 – June 2.
“It is going to continue to be nice and tight with the entries of Campbell and Crick and also Hodges and Ojeda with both at the 6 hour – it is going to be a great race to watch,” Grant said.
